I was lucky enough to be given a copy of this book to review by the author. I was really looking forward to reading it as I tend to avoid baby related books (the reason for that is a whole other reason that I won’t go into now!) so I set myself a mini challenge of giving this book a fair chance and I’m glad I did. Set in the backdrop of a school the book tells the story of Em and Mike, they have just got married and as they are both teachers everyone assumes they will have a baby right away. Unfortunately Em doesn’t want children – ever, she just hasn’t told Mike!
Ems relationships with the other characters really are the main focus of the book and Kathryn Player writes all the characters very well. I liked Ems parents, who are a little eccentric (more her mum really) and her mother in law who is a cougar with hopes of marriage – all of which are very funny and add some interesting alternative sub plots to the main story line. Ems friends Shaun and Laura are a little cliché; Shaun is a commitment phobic, womanising PE Teacher and Laura is the pretty girl who wants to find her Mr Right and her happy ever after. That being said they do all complement one another and their little ‘three-some’ have hilarious consequences. The story wouldn’t be the same without them. Which brings me onto her husband mike – he is the character I most disliked throughout this book, I found him patronising, condescending and a ‘know it all’, and sometime I found myself wanting Em to tell him to ‘sod off’, however I did thaw towards him by the end and started to like him.
There is some laugh out loud moments and even when there are darker moments they are written with a comedic element which helps the story move along. I was pleasantly surprised with how the story ended and I closed the book with a smile on my face.
Putting it simply this is a really great book. It’s funny, emotional and very charming. I couldn’t put it down once I had started and was gutted when the story finished. There is definitely scope for a sequel (please!)
